Fall 2008 Ad Design. Team Ramrod!

Fellow Ramrodians, this is the new post for Paulines Fall 2008 ad design class.
Here, we will be able to stay in contact with one another in order to share ideas and create an effective campaign.

Also, since we have laid out a plan of action that will determine who will be working on the print ad, who will work on the billboard and etc... I would like for all of you to know to not limit yourself to one idea.

We all need to come up with different sketches and be ready by Monday at the latest.

The 2 print ads, and one billboard ad that each focus on one of the three characteristics listed on the assignment sheet is the main concern right now. We need variation in characteristics, so explore all the traits and try not to focus on one. This way we will have a good variety of concepts and also so we don't show up to class with only one idea based on the just one characteristic of the product.

See you all later and don't forget to work on the TAG LINES! We should start seeing some of these on the forum, these tag lines will be the foundation of our campaign. TOP PRIORITY... TAG LINES!

Re: Fall 2008 Ad Design. Team Ramrod!

I was thinking about what we should think about when we are coming up with our tag lines.
We should relate back to the product, our product being Doritos, but not too literal. So it would be a good idea to start thinking of obvious taglines like, 'nacho cheese chips' or 'you cant eat just one' then, as soon as we exhaust all obvious possibilities, we cant start working on more abstract taglines.

This is just something I am thinking. It is not something we have to do. I'm just here bored at work and figured I should just ramble to pass the time. wink
Happy Thanksgivng y'all!

Re: Fall 2008 Ad Design. Team Ramrod!

Hey guys..its James.  I was to return to TX today but had to turn back around since its was snowing in Arkansas and the roads were all iced up.  I'm unable to make it to class tomorrow since I'll be hitting the road in the morning; therefore, I'll be posting my thoughts on here and hopefully you all have your ideas to share in exchange. So basically we were to come up with thumbs/concepts and taglines over our break and I did some research on Doritos and I found that Doritos means "little bits of gold".  I tried to find the reason for its triangular shape but couldn't really find anything.  But I believe the reason for it is that its easily to consume..easier to put in your mouth vs. if it were a circle or a square, etc.  The original chips had sharp corners however, "the new design gave each chip rounded corners, making it easier to eat and reducing the scrap resulting from broken corners".  And of course Doritos is known for its intense, addicting flavors.

Our objective is to portray Doritos as an icon meaning it is regarded as a representative symbol of something.  With that being said, when I think of Doritos..I think of it being extreme...an icon of extremity because of its intense flavor that makes you want to come back for more just like an adrenaline rush from activities like skydiving, bungee jumping, skateboarding..etc that makes you want to do it again.  So I was thinking of relating Doritos to that idea.  And so for the ad, I visualized it as a mixture of vector and raster art to make it interesting.  For an example, the main focus would be like an image of somebody skydiving and they have their arms extended reaching for the bag of Doritos and the background be some intense vector work with colors and shapes to emphasize the characteristics of Doritos chips.  I hope this idea hasn't been done, but that was my initial visual when I thought about what we could do.  This is more of the lines of its flavor intensity.

If we were to do something about shape...well triangles are symbols of stability.  I was thinking of things that are triangular and easily recognizable such as the pyramids.  Maybe we could do something along the lines of that.  I haven't thought much about its shape thoroughly though..but just an idea.

Regarding sound...when you eat Doritos, all you hear is crunches.  The sound of crunching stands out even if you're a room filled with conversations, you can't help but notice the sound that makes your mouth water.  So like we discuss for the TV spot we could do something with a music beat mixed with crunching and it could feature someone walking down a street and he doesn't pay attention to anything but his chips.  I dont' know if you guys wanted to use that idea for TV spot but it could also turn into a print ad.

I haven't really come up with taglines.  I tend to consider it after the artwork which is not the right direction but I'm still exercising it!  I'll let you all know if I do come up with any.  But maybe something like: "An intense kick of adrenaline rush"...to go with my first idea.  I don't know haha.  Input would nice.  I'll be checking the forum often to see what you guys went over on Monday.  I'll see you all Wednesday so we could puzzle everything together.  Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving!

I like the ideas you have discussed in the thread. The notions of 'intensity' and 'extreme' would really work for a fresh young audience and I think when we meet we should think about focusing on a young and energetic audience.

This is what I've been working on.  I wanted everything but the guy and the Dorito chip to be in black and white to help emphasize the cinematic theme and for it to be more dramatic.  Let me know if you have any suggestions.  Tomorrow I'm hoping we can all lay everything that we have out and make suggestions and see where we could go from there.  I'm also hoping that we can also work on the plan book as well.
